The begonia family contains more than 1,800 species and hybrids, many of which are commonly grown as potted foliage plants. Avoid pH levels above 6.0, as high pH can cause iron deficiency. Begonias are a commonly used bedding plant that can provide striking color in the landscape throughout the year. Wax begonias are outdoor bedding plants that have smooth leaves and an abundance of flowers, hence the scientific name semperflorens, which means always. In other words, there may be around 88,000 seeds per gram for wax begonia (Begonia Semperflorens-cultorum) and about 35,000 seeds per gram for tuber begonia. Wax begonias are used extensively in the landscape as a bedding or groundcover plant, but are also used in container plantings or baskets. Use a pair of forceps to carefully remove the male flower from the plant. Fertilize the crop weekly with 100-150 ppm nitrogen, using a complete balanced fertilizer. Moderate fertilization levels are required. Begonia flower seeds are delicate and the consistency of powder. Begin feeding with a 14-4-14, 14-2-14 or 17-5-17 fertilizer at 50–60 ppm. Wax Begonias plants are also great for container gardening. Initial feeding should be with a balanced fertilizer low in ammonium. Fertilized water should not exceed an EC of 0.5. An ADT (average daily temperature of 67 ˚F (19 ˚C) will give the fastest finished crop. Thereafter temperatures may be lowered to 62–65 ☏ (16–18 ☌) day and night. Wax Begonias (Begonia x semperflorens-cultorum): Few other annuals can beat the wax begonias for hardiness and continuous flowering throughout the summer. For irrigation use warm water (above 64 ☏ / 18 ☌) only.Ħ8–70 ☏ (20–21☌) nights, 64–67 ☏ (18–19 ☌) days for the first 14 days or until the roots reach the bottom of the container. Description With 2,002 species, Begonia is one of the largest genera of flowering plants. Optimum conditions for seedling development, beginning on the day of sowing until radicle emergence.
